An early look at Super Bowl
XL Future Odds by: Mark Franco
There aren’t too many long shots worthy of a
Super Bowl future book wager. The last big NFL underdog
that killed the sports books was during the 1999-2000
campaign when the 200/1 St. Louis Rams won Super Bowl
XXXIV.
If you are shopping for Super Bowl
future book prices either offshore or in Las Vegas,
you will no longer find value in betting the biggest
game of the year in the preseason.
This should only be a fun-type of wager
because you are never going to get true odds on a
team to win it all in August or September. A few teams
worth a shot to win Super Bowl XL appear below. Keep
in mind I’m not looking to play any team with
a short price. I’m looking for a middle-of-the-road
team that can make the jump to the next level.
The Atlanta Falcons (12/1)
The Falcons have a nice price considering
they made it all the way to the NFC title game a year
ago. Head coach Jim Mora Jr. turned these lame duck
birds into winners last season with a great running
game and a top notch defense.
If the Falcons want to reach the next
level and make a serious Super Bowl bid, they have
to get the passing game going. The team ranked 30th
in passing last year, leaving most of the work load
to the legs of Michael Vick and running backs Warrick
Dunn and T.J. Duckett. Wide receiver Roddy White,
this year’s first-round draft choice, or 2004
first-round pick Michael Jenkins, must emerge as a
pass-catching threat. Make no mistake, Vick is still
a young quarterback who must have some help down field
to really blossom and get this team to the next level.
He must also show development within the offensive
scheme and read coverage better.
Minnesota Vikings (15/1)
The Vikings have been busy revamping
their roster and look to be contenders in the NFC.
This is finally Daunte Culpepper's team with the trade
of Randy Moss to the Oakland Raiders.
Defense is where Minnesota made major
offseason moves. Starting at the two defensive end
positions will be Kenechi Udeze and Darrion Scott.
At the defensive tackle will be Pro Bowler and sack-master
Kevin Williams and the newly acquired run-stop specialist
Pat Williams from Buffalo.
The linebackers will be Napoleon Harris,
who was acquired in the Moss trade, Sam Cowart, a
signed free agent, and the hard-hitting Dontarrious
Thomas. Aggressive Antoine Winfield will be at one
cornerback. Fred Smoot, a free agent from Washington,
will be at the other corner.
Darren Sharper from the Packers will
be stationed at free safety. Corey Chavous will be
back at strong safety.
If the Vikings’ defense works
out with all their new players, and with Daunte Culpepper
leading the offense, only the Eagles or Falcons can
stop the Vikings from making the Super Bowl.
Oakland Raiders (25/1)
The Raiders’ new look is much
more then wide receiver Randy Moss. Oakland was active
in free-agency and picked up a solid running back
in Lamont Jordan. He logged an impressive 4.9 yards
per rush on 262 carries during four seasons with the
Jets. The 230-pound back will now have the opportunity
to carry the ball on a regular basis and be a star
for the Silver and Black.
The offense will feature some of the
most dynamic playmakers in the game today. Wide Receivers
Jerry Porter and Ronald Curry are coming off of their
best seasons, while tight ends Courtney Anderson and
Teyo Johnson continue to improve.
The acquisition of Moss in a trade
with the Vikings makes Oakland a long-ball threat
with quarterback Kerry Collins having a great arm.
A solid return of an offensive line which ranked fifth
in the NFL in sacks allowed per pass attempt and the
Raiders have the players in place for a high octane
offense.
Can Warren Sapp and Ted Washington
get this defense to step it up? If so, the Raiders
do have a shot to contend in the AFC. I’m also
looking to play the boys from Oakland ‘OVER’
eight wins.
