the most pertinent information that will help
you handicap games in the future. College football
is filled with quirky plays, misleading scores
and surprise endings. Fargo takes you inside
the action.
(3) VIRGINIA TECH 30 (13) Boston College

Virginia Tech outgained the Eagles
492-183 and held them to just 10 first downs.
After Boston College pulled to within 10 points
with a 3rd quarter field goal, the Hokies defense
allowed just 20 total yards the rest of the
way. Virginia Tech put the game away with an
interception return for a touchdown with three
minutes remaining to get the cover.
Colorado State 35 NEW
MEXICO 25
New Mexico started the game strong
by jumping out to a 22-5 lead but the Rams defense
came alive and held the Lobos to 48 total yards
in the second half. New Mexico scored on every
possession in the first half but didn’t
cross midfield in the final two quarters. The
Lobos did hold Colorado St. to 31 yards on 41
carries (0.8 ypc).
GEORGIA TECH 10 Clemson

Clemson lost its fourth game
by six points or less on the season despite
outgaining the Yellow Jackets but four turnovers
did the Tigers in. The Tigers opened the game
by driving 72 yards but fumbled at the Georgia
Tech eight-yard line. Clemson drove to the Yellow
Jackets 36-yard line late in the fourth quarter
but failed on a fourth down attempt.
Oklahoma 31 NEBRASKA

Oklahoma built a 21-3 lead and
held off a late Nebraska rally to grab the win.
The Sooners held Nebraska to 16 yards rushing
on 34 carries (0.5 ypc) thanks to nine sacks
for 57 yards. Oklahoma forced the Huskers to
three-and-out on their first five possessions
and Nebraska gained just 101 total yards in
the first half. The Sooners defense stood on
fourth down to end the game.
Wake Forest 44 DUKE 6
Wake Forest racked up 557 yards
of offense including 419 yards rushing on 51
carries (8.2 ypc). Duke gained just 50 yards
on the ground on 31 carries (1.6 ypc). The Blue
Devils crossed midfield only twice on the day
and had just two drives of more than 26 yards.
Wake Forest had seven drives of 54 yards or
more.
NC STATE 21 Southern
Miss 17
NC State rallied from a 10-point
deficit with two fourth quarter touchdowns to
pull out the win. The Wolfpack outgained Southern
Miss 425-246 but nearly let the game slip away
with four turnovers all inside its own 42-yard
line. The defense forced the Golden Eagles to
eight punts in the first half but the offense
committed all of their turnovers in the first
30 minutes.
Cincinnati 22 SYRACUSE

The long season continues for
Syracuse as a dropped pass on fourth down inside
the Cincinnati 30-yard line resulted in another
loss. The Orange won the yardage battle by five
yards but the Bearcats held them to just 52
yards rushing on 40 carries (1.3 ypc). Cincinnati
scored the game winning touchdown on a 17-yard
fumble recovery early in the fourth quarter.
(12) Ohio State 45 MINNESOTA

Minnesota hung 578 yards of offense
on Ohio St. but it was the Buckeyes who scored
four touchdowns in their first five second half
drives to pull away. Ohio St. scored on a kickoff
return in the first half to take a 10-point
lead but Minnesota was able to tie the score
before the break. The Gophers put together just
one scoring drive in the second half not counting
the garbage score.
(15) Wisconsin 41 ILLINOIS

Wisconsin scored first and never
gave up the lead even though Illinois outgained
the Badgers 538-464. The Illini were hurt by
two missed field goals and interception inside
Wisconsin territory. The teams combined for
500 yards rushing and it was Wisconsin with
the biggest one on a 46-yard touchdown to seal
the game.
MICHIGAN STATE 46 Indiana

Indiana hung around for a while
but costly mistakes did the Hoosiers in as they
were 1-4 inside the redzone and committed four
turnovers that negated 181 yards of offense.
Michigan St. piled up 493 yards of offense and
started the game by returning the opening kickoff
for a touchdown. The Spartans had a balanced
attack of 237 yards rushing and 256 yards passing.
(17) Texas Tech 28 BAYLOR
0
Texas Tech blew open a close
game by scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter.
Baylor was outgained by just 50 total yards
but the Bears were hurt by their own mistakes.
They committed four turnovers inside Red Raiders
territory, turned it over on downs at the one-yard
line and missed a 36-yard field goal. They crossed
midfield eight times but failed to score.
(19) AUBURN 27 Ole Miss

Auburn held the Rebels to 209
total yards while Mississippi didn’t have
a single drive longer than 34 yards. The Rebels
field goal was the result of a fumble by the
Tigers. Auburn had two fumbles, one that resulted
in the field goal and another that was lost
at the Mississippi five-yard line. The Tigers
held the Rebels to 23 yards rushing on 27 carries
(0.9 ypc).
KANSAS 13 Missouri 3
The Tigers managed just 180 total
yards including 33 yards rushing on 30 carries
(1.1 ypc). Kansas wasn’t much better on
offense with 298 total yards but two touchdowns
were more than enough. The Jayhawks turned the
ball over on two of their first three possessions
but Missouri converted just one of two field
goal attempts.

Miami-Ohio 41 TEMPLE

Miami outgained the Owls 506-195
but the game was still close late in the second
quarter until the RedHawks scored the final
24 points of the game. Temple had only 74 total
yards in the second half, crossing midfield
only once. Miami finished 12-19 on third and
four down conversions while controlling the
clock for 11 minutes more.
CENTRAL MICH 21 Toledo

Total yardage numbers differed
by just eight yards and first downs by just
two in a game that came down to the final play.
Central Michigan allowed the Rockets to get
down to the four-yard line but Toledo had only
once chance to win the game and threw an incomplete
pass. Toledo was inside the Chippewas 35-yard
line on its last five possessions but managed
just three points.
Ohio U 34 BUFFALO 20
Ohio jumped out to a 20-0 lead
but the Bobcats nearly let the Bulls back in
the game as Buffalo pulled to within a touchdown
early in the fourth quarter. The Bulls fumbled
on their own 24-yard line on its next possession
that enabled the Bobcats to score their final
touchdown to put the game away. Ohio rushed
for 307 yards on 45 carries (6.8 ypc)
WESTERN MICH 44 Kent
State 14
Western Michigan scored the first
21 points but let the Golden Flashes pull within
seven points midway through the third quarter.
The Broncos then scored the final 23 points
of the game, 16 coming from the defense on a
fumble return, interception return and a safety.
The Broncos finished with just 33 more total
yards but held Kent to one yard rushing.
U-C-F 30 EAST CAROLINA

East Carolina outgained the Golden
Knights 542-430 but the Pirates had three costly
interceptions. All three picks were inside their
own 37-yard line and led to 10 points for Central
Florida which was the ultimate difference. The
Pirates also has a fumble at the Golden Knights
17-yard line, killing a long drive and earlier
missed a field goal.
Colorado 23 KANSAS STATE

Colorado blew a late 10-point
lead but the Buffaloes recovered a fumble at
the Wildcats 26-yard line with under a minute
remaining and kicked the game winning 50-yard
field goal with six seconds left. Colorado finished
with 71 more total yards but the Buffaloes had
11 penalties, six of which let to Kansas St.
first downs. The teams combined for just 172
yards rushing.
(5) ALABAMA 35 Utah State

Utah St. managed 305 yards of
offense against the tough Tide defense but could
muster just three points. The Aggies were inside
Alabama territory six times but missed two field
goals and had a ball picked off. The Tide scored
easily on their first two possessions but were
forced to punt on their next four drives. Utah
St. had seven three-and-outs.
B-Y-U 62 Air Force 41
BYU racked up 683 yards of offense
and went ahead 41-7 midway through the third
quarter to put the game away early. The Cougars
were inside Air Force territory in all but three
of their 15 possessions while the defense forced
four turnovers in the first seven Falcons drives.
Air Force did score touchdowns on five straight
possessions in the second half but it was too
late.
BOISE STATE 49 Nevada

Boise St. outgained the Wolf
Pack by only 22 total yards but Nevada had five
interceptions, two inside the Broncos 10-yard
line and one at its own eight yard line. Boise
St had 21 points off turnovers while another
touchdown was set up on a long punt return,
resulting in a 17-yard scoring drive. The Broncos
rushed for 264 yards on 42 carries (6.3 ypc).
RUTGERS 31 Navy 21
Navy was outgained by only four
yards but lost the turnover battle 3-0, two
of which led to Rutgers touchdowns. The third
was an interception on its final drive that
ended the game. The Scarlet Knights had three
touchdown drives that were 32 yards or less
but still controlled the clock for 10 minutes
longer. Rutgers finished 18-21 passing.
