power raTINGS - NFL Power Poll - Week 4
*All
teams are measured from a top rating of 25. Home
field advantage is worth 3 points. To calculate
the approximate pointspread, simply add home field
advantage to the power rating of the team playing
at home and then subtract the visiting teams power
rating from this total.
1. Indianapolis Colts (4-0) -
The Colts are still getting it done with their
much-improved defense, but last week their offense
finally came alive with Peyton Manning tossing
4 touchdown passes. We all know this squad will
have no problem scoring points this year, but
if the defense continues to amaze (only 26 points
allowed this year), Indy is easily the best team
in the NFL at this point in time. Plus, they have
a cakewalk of a schedule upcoming. This week:
@ San Francisco. PR = 23
2. Philadelphia Eagles (3-1) -
The Eagles showed true champion grit last week,
overcoming a 17-point deficit in beating the Kansas
City Chiefs in one of the most hostile environments
in the NFL. Their special teams were abnormally
atrocious but Donovan NcNabb had his 2nd straight
magnificant game, throwing for 369 yards and 3
touchdowns and Terrell Owens caught 11 balls for
171 yards. They did, however, give up 31 points,
but considering the quality of the Chiefs' offense,
I don't think this is any cause for concern. This
week: @ Dallas. PR = 21
3. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-1)
- The Steelers are off a bye week last Sunday
and suddenly are facing a huge game this Monday
night in San Diego. Ben Roethilisberger, thus
far, has avoided the sophmore jinx and this team
should be poised and ready to go after their setback
vs New England 2 weeks ago. You can bet HC Bill
Cowher will have this team ready to play. This
week: @ San Diego. PR = 20
4. Cincinnati Bengals (4-0) -
As hard as I tried, I just couldnt rate this team
any further down on my list. Although it wasn't
pretty, the Bengals got the job done against a
hungry, winless Texans team off a bye. In that
game, the Bengals showed something that I hadn't
seen from this team yet, a willingness to bear
down and pull off a tight game that was tied in
the 4th quarter. This team is for real, folks.
This week: @ Jacksonville. PR = 19
5. Atlanta Falcons (3-1) - Another solid
win for the Falcons last Sunday, absolutely destoying
the Minnesota Vikings. The most underrated defense
in the NFL played another solid game, holding
Minnesota scoreless until the 4th quarter and
making Daunte Culpepper miserable. The Falcons
ran for nearly 270 yards but their passing game
left alot to be desired with part of the reason
being that Michael Vick went down in the 3rd quarter.
If the passing game improves, this squad could
surplant the Eagles (a team they've already beaten)
as the team to beat in the NFC. This week: vs
New England. PR = 19
6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-0)
- Another tight game but another notch in the
W column for the undefeated Buccaneers. Actually
the 17-13 final over the Lions wasn't as close
as the score indicated, as Tampa Bay held a 353-226
total yard advantage. QB Brian Griese's 3 interceptions
kept this game close. I've seen enough of this
team to know that their defense is vastly improved
this year, but the offense must show a little
more gusto to compete with the big boys. Still,
who would have thought the Bucs would be undefeated
at this point in time? This week: @ New York Jets.
PR = 18
7. Denver Broncos (3-1) - After
getting throttled by the Dolphins on opening weekend,
the Broncos have gotten progressively better each
week since then, capped by a rather easy road
victory over the Jacksonville Jags last Sunday.
Denver's defense has been absolutely outstanding
and the running game (which I though would be
a problem) has now rushed for over 400 yards in
their last 2 games. Although there is always the
"Jake Plummer Factor", if this team can continue
to win on the road, the Broncos are starting to
look like a playoff team. This Week: vs Washington.
PR = 18
8. San Diego Chargers (2-2) -
The Chargers pulled off the shocker of the weekend,
pummeling the Patriots 41-17 on the road in Foxboro,
snapping the Pats' 21-game home winning streak.
LaDanian Tomlinson had another huge game and the
Chargers have now put up 86 points in their last
2 games. Can the Chargers' defense play well enough
to keep them in tight games? That remains to be
seen. But remember, this team is 2 close games
from being 4-0 and just 7 points away from being
on a 19-1 ATS run. This week: vs Pittsburgh. PR
= 17
9. New England Patriots (2-2)
- Are the Patriots in trouble? It sure seemed
that way last Sunday in the midst of their woodshed
beating at the hands of the San Diego Chargers.
This team has been replacing old/injured players
for years and haven't skipped a beat, but maybe
this time it has caught up to them. Losing Rodney
Harrison was absolutely huge and Corey Dillon
has yet to have a good game. One of the most interesting
stories this year will be how the Patriots respond
to their sudden adversity. This week: @ Atlanta.
PR = 17
10. Washington Redskins (3-0)
- Although the game was close (a 20-17 win in
OT), a win is a win and Joe Gibbs' Redskins are
still undefeated. Replacing Patrick Ramsey with
Mark Brunell is looking more and more like the
right move, and with an excellent defense and
special teams, this Washington team may just surprise
some people this year. This week: @ Denver. PR
= 16
11. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-2)
- I admit I have no accurate read on this team
right now. After nearly beating the Colts, winning
on the road against the NY Jets, they inexplically
lay an egg last Sunday at home vs the Broncos.
Their defense will keep them in most games, but
the offense has to improve in order for this squad
to reach the upper-echilon. This was supposed
to be the year that QB Byron Leftwich stepped
it up. So far he hasn't. A couple of tough games
up ahead vs Cincinnati and Pittsburgh will let
us know what this team is all about. This week:
vs Cincinnati. PR = 16
12. New York Giants (3-1) - The
Giants followed up their only loss 2 weeks ago
with a complete thrashing of the St louis Rams
last Sunday. There is absolutely nothing wrong
with New York's offense. Eli Manning already has
9 touchdown passes. Plaxico Burress is starting
to look like one of the best acquistions in the
NFL this year, and Tiki Barber again looks solid.
But, can they consistantly stop teams on defense?
Whether or not the G-men make the playoffs depends
upon that answer. This week: Bye. PR = 16
13. Kansas City Chiefs (2-2) -
After the first 2 weeks of the season, it indeed
looked like the Chiefs' defense was much improved.
That hasn't been the case the last 2 weeks. Last
Sunday, they blew a 17-0 lead at home to the Eagles
in a disgusting loss. They had nobody covering
Terrell Owens on about 15 plays and their best
player, Tony Gonzalez was used as a decoy, catching
only 2 passes for 5 yards. My feeling is that
the Chiefs' learned something and will rebound.
This week: Bye. PR = 15
14. Carolina Panthers (2-2) -
As predicted, this Carolina team is nowhere near
a Super Bowl caliber team as some people (and
magazines) made them out to be. Last Monday's
game against Green Bay showed exactly why. A near
meltdown in the 4th quarter almost cost them the
win. Their Super Bowl team of a few years back
played defense. This year's version doesn't. This
week: @ Arizona. PR = 14
15. Miami Dolphins (2-1) - I
really like the job Nick Saben has done with this
squad, and although it may not come to fruition
this year, this should be a team to reckon with
in the next couple. As funny as it sounds, Gus
Frerotte is the best QB the Dolphins have had
in years and he will only improve as he gains
rapport with a decent group or wide receivers.
The defense is solid and remember: Miami hasn't
even unleashed Ricky Williams yet. This week:
@ Buffalo. PR = 14
16. Dallas Cowboys (2-2) - This week: vs Philadelphia.
PR = 14
17. New Orleans (2-2) - This week: @ Green Bay.
PR = 13
18. Buffalo Bills (1-3) - This week: vs Miami.
PR = 13
19. St Louis Rams (2-2) - This week: vs Seattle.
PR = 13
20. Seattle Seahawks (2-2) - This week: @ St Louis.
PR = 13
21. Baltimore Ravens (1-2) - This week: @ Detroit.
PR = 13
22. Chicago Bears (1-2) - This week: @ Cleveland.
PR = 12
23. Oakland Raiders (1-3) - This week: Bye. PR
= 12
24: Detroit Lions (1-3) - This week: vs Baltimore.
PR = 11
25: Tennessee Titans (1-3) - This week: @ Houston.
PR = 9
26. Arizona Cardinals (1-3) - This week: vs Carolina.
PR = 9
27. Minnesota Vikings (1-3) - This week: Bye.
PR = 9
28. New York Jets (1-3) - This week: vs Tampa
Bay. PR = 8
29. Green Bay Packers (0-4) - This week: vs New
Orleans. PR = 8
30. Cleveland Browns (1-2) - This week: vs Chicago.
PR = 8
31. Houston Texans (0-3) - This week: vs Tennessee.
PR = 7
32. San Francisco 49ers (1-3) - This week: vs
Indianapolis. PR = 7
