In
our weekly installment, we again take a look at
some of the more interesting results from last
weekend's slate of college games to help you gain
an edge when handicapping upcoming contests.
Tigers Toothless Against Better Foes .
Texas held a slim 14-13 lead over Missouri after
one quarter on Saturday before ripping off 37
straight unanswered points over the final three
periods. Missouri would score a garbage TD in
the waning minutes, but still dropped to 1-7
vs. Top 10 teams since head coach Pinknel's
arrival in Columbia.
Rockets Burned In Misleading Box Score .
Toledo led Fresno State 7-0 after the first
quarter, but was outscored 44-7 in the final
three periods. The Rockets crashed and burned
despite holding an edge in total yards (304-248)
and time of possession (37:00-23:00). This was
not a misleading final score, however, but rather
a misleading final box score. FSU dominated
the line of scrimmage and capitalized on special
teams and turnovers. Bulldogs scored on a blocked
punt return for a TD, fumble return for a TD
and had 3 additional scoring drives of 30 yards
or less.
Pitiful Panthers . Pittsburgh fell to
1-4 SU and 1-3 ATS after being dominated by
Rutgers last Friday night. The Panthers were
held to -8 yards rushing for the game against
a Rutgers defense ranked 78th in the nation
this year and 103rd last season. Don't be misled
by the 37-29 final score; the Scarlet Knights
fortified a 27-0 lead at the end of first half
and let up in the final two periods with the
outcome never in doubt.
Cardinals Soar in 2nd Half . After an
embarrassing 45-15 loss to Southern Florida,
Louisville led Florida Atlantic by just ten
points at the half as a whopping 38 point favorite
last week. But like a Kentucky Derby horse that
starts slow and saves its best for the home
stretch, the Cards scored 41 unanswered in the
final 30 minutes for an easy cover.
Indiana Enters Through Backdoor in Wisconsin
. The Badgers led the Hoosiers 41-17 as
an 18-point favorite late in the 4th quarter.
But IND put together a 70+ yard drive and capped
it off with a meaningless TD with less than
two minutes remaining to give their backers
the cover.

Buffs Stampede Cowboys
. Colorado outgained Oklahoma State 381 to
208 yards in Saturday's 34-0 Stillwater massacre.
It was the first time in 15 years that Oklahoma
State was blanked at home. It was also the Cowboys
first test of the season after three uninspiring
wins against Montana State, Florida Atlantic and
Arkansas State.
Big 12 Road is Bad News for Bears . Baylor
improved to 3-0 ATS despite falling to 0-37
SU on the Big 12 trail after Saturday's 16-13
OT loss at Texas A&M as a 23.5-point underdog.
Baylor dominated the first half, holding the
Aggies to just 3 first downs and 70 yards. The
Bears finished the day by outgaining Texas A&M
by 116 yards while holding on to the ball for
almost 10 more minutes and racking up five sacks
while allowing zero in the loss.
Suspensions and Pointspread Inflation .
Already 0-3 on the season, Ball State had 15
players suspended prior to its tilt at Boston
College. David Letterman's Alma Mater was limited
to 46 yards rushing and 159 yards total, while
BC amassed 223 on the ground and 471 overall
en route to a 38-0 demolition. Nevertheless,
Ball State's performance was just enough to
hang under the enormous 39 point closing number.
Utes Tar and Feathered By Own Mistakes. Utah
is coming off a 37-17 loss at North Carolina
despite finishing the day with more yards, first
downs and an edge in time of possession. But
as is so often the case, turnovers-five in this
case-scalped the Utes and their backers.
Gophers Squashed in Happy Valley . Penn
State waxed No. 18 Minnesota 44-14 as a 1-point
home dog this past Saturday. The Nittany Lion's
defense held Minnesota's top ranked running
game to only 113 yards and Heisman Hopeful Laurence
Maroney to only 48 yards. The Lions dominated
the game from start to finish, pilling up 364
yards rushing, while holding an edge in first
downs (35-13) and total yards (539-287). It
was Paterno's first win over a ranked opponent
in three years.
Herd Sneak Past Mustangs In Misleading Final
. In last week's overtime win against SMU,
Marshall finished with huge edges in first downs
(21-7) and total yards (413-191), but still
needed overtime to get past the lowly Mustangs.
The Thundering Herd were held scoreless through
three quarters before stampeding back to tie
the game at 10-10 late in the final period to
force OT. Marshall ended up winning 16-13, but
failed to grab the green as an 11-point home
favorite.
Bulls Offense Charges At Last. Down 24-0
after 3 quarters, Buffalo outscored Western
Michigan 21-7 in the final period and grabbed
the backdoor cover as a 10.5 point dog. The
Bulls limped in with a grand total of 3 points
in 15 quarters of play prior to the 21-point
outburst.
