| The
Big 12 Report: Week 3
by Tony George
The good news for me is that we cashed another
featured play from the Big 12 last week, as Iowa
State got all over Iowa in our premium play, providing
another Saturday upset, as the week before TCU
upended Oklahoma to make our featured Saturday
Game of the days out of the Big 12 undefeated
on the year. The Big 12 was in the limelight again
as both Big 10 powers Iowa and Ohio State both
fell to Big 12 schools, as Mac Brown and Texas
got the win at Columbus in a thriller. Missouri
fell huge last week to New Mexico which was a
surprise and Nebraska beat Wake Forest in Lincoln,
31-3 but still struggled on offense, but did raise
some eyebrows. Oklahoma had some trouble putting
Tulsa away, and they face UCLA this week, it should
be a good one. All in all, the Big 12 made a splash
on the national scene last week, and this week
should be no different, so lets take a look at
what is on tap. Featured
games this week:
Kansas vs. Louisiana
Tech (+14)
Kansas has found some offense
and a featured RB in Cornish, 14 rushes for
148 yards the last 2 weeks as KU starts out
2-0, and QB Luke has found his stride as well.
Tech is 0-5 their last 5 as a double digit road
dog, and their offense is averaging 3 ppg right
now, as compared to the Jayhawks 33 ppg average.
Look for KU to go to 3-0 on the season with
ease at home this Saturday.
Missouri vs. Troy (+20.5)
Last year Troy beat Missou on
ESPN on a Thursday Night after Missou blew a
14-0 lead. Of course last year Troy has a great
ball club that was senior laden, and this year
their timing is very bad to show up in Columbia
for a re-match. Missouri fell at home to New
Mexico last week, and will have double revenge
on Troy, for last years embarrassment and last
weeks debacle as a huge favorite. Missouri's
offense has racked up over 500 yards per game
and averaged 39 points, while Troy has managed
13 ppg and 74 yards rushing per game. Missouri
has trouble on defense, but I look for a highly
motivated Missou team to rebound at home with
an easy double digit win. Missouri by 22.
Pitt
@ Nebraska (-10)- MY FEATURED PLAY OF THE WEEK.
Oklahoma @ UCLA (-6.5)
The secret is out on OU, they
are not near the team they have been in the
past and have serious trouble at quarterback
right now. Starting a freshman in Bomar has
produced struggles with a loss to TCU and a
near fatal experiment with Tulsa, both in Norman.
The secondary for OU is a mess, and the offensive
line can't perform due to inexperience, and
the offense is struggling even with all world
Adrian Petersen at RB who touched the ball on
34 of the 53 offensive plays the Sooners ran
last week. UCLA has had NO trouble in putting
up points at 54 ppg, and I doubt OU can trade
punches with UCLA, even if they can contain
the Bruins to 28 points here. UCLA's offense
is out-stating OU's 217 yards per game, and
while UCLA has played some patsy teams, they
are a formidable foe for Oklahoma this Saturday.
The line is about right, look for UCLA to eak
out a win here.
Baylor vs. Army (+5.5)
I do not trust Baylor, now sporting
green helmets and currently 2-0, laying anything
over 3 on the road. Lets not get ahead of ourselves
here, this is Baylor. BUT, a closer look at
the numbers shows Baylor with 38 points per
game and allowing only 18, meanwhile Army is
anemic on offense with a 7 point output last
week while allowing a whopping 44 to a good
Boston College team. While the paper stats look
like a huge take for Baylor, they struggled
in key areas on offense last week against lowly
Samford and I look for Army to play tough at
home and make a good game of this, and a 3 point
game one way or the other. The dog bites here.
Those are my takes for week
3 of the Big 12. There are other games but Texas
playing Rice is "name the score time" for Mac
Brown and other games bear little meaning in
terms of contests this week. Look for my featured
play this week between my hometown Huskers and
the Pitt Panthers, and we'll have another Big
12 report out next week, as conference play
begins.
