NFL Sportsbook Betting - Saints at Colts - Week 1

This time, it counts.
It’s time to forget
everything you learned about preseason NFL betting
and get ready for the 2007 campaign – starting
with Thursday’s potential Super Bowl XLII
preview between the New Orleans Saints and the
defending champion Indianapolis Colts.
There’s been plenty of buzz about the
Saints. How much buzz? Try +800 on the NFL odds
list to win the Super Bowl - the same price the
Colts are getting. On the surface, the optimism
is justified. This is still just Year Two for
the Saints under coach Sean Payton. It’s
also the second kick at the can for QB Drew Brees,
RB Reggie Bush and WR Marques Colston. That talented
trio led the Saints offense from 25th to fifth
in the league in terms of efficiency.
So why do the whizzes
at Football Outsiders project the Saints to
go from first to worst in the ultra-competitive
NFC South? Take a look at that defense. It
wasn’t very good last
year – No. 19 in the NFL – and figures
to see only marginal improvement on the D-line
with the development of fourth-year end Will
Smith and the depth addition of veteran tackle
Kendrick Clancy. But Clancy, like most of the
line, is undersized and ill-suited for the pass
rush, and backup tackle Antwan Lake is expected
to start against the Colts after Brian Young
missed the entire preseason recovering from a
broken right foot.
This is bad news for New Orleans Saints supporters.
The line was easily the best part of the New
Orleans defense last year, and it looks like
it could be crushed on Thursday by the powerful
Colts. The retirement of tackle Tarik Glenn means
that second-round pick Tony Ugoh will start,
but this is still a dominant line with an outstanding
veteran coach in Howard Mudd.
You might not be familiar
with Mudd, but you’ve
probably heard of Peyton Manning, Joesph Addai,
Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne. The Colts offense
was the best in the NFL last year, and has room
to get better with Addai as an every-down back
and first-round pick Anthony Gonzalez taking
over the slot receiver role from Brandon Stokley.
The Indianapolis Colts
have their weaknesses, though. Their defense
was ranked just 27th in the league last year,
and though it improved considerably with the
return of safety Bob Sanders, it’s not the kind of unit you normally
associate with a Super Bowl winner. Football
Outsiders projects the Colts to fall back to
earth and finish around 9-7. However stingy FO
might be, that’s still better than what
they envision for the Saints.
