San Francisco 49ers +3 at St. Louis Rams -3
The Rams may be favored
in this one, but they are in big time trouble.
They lost their best offensive lineman, Pro Bowler
T Orlando Pace, for the season after he ripped
up his shoulder in Week 1 against the Carolina
Panthers, and they were already mad thin on the
line prior to his departure. This will almost
guarantee that the 49ers will be sending serious
pressure towards Rams QB Marc Bulger, as they
utilize a much-improved linebacker corps with
the additions of rookie Patrick Willis and former
Patriot Tully Banta-Cain. Look for the Rams to
go 0-2 at home and on the season.
NFL Free Pick: San Francisco
N.Y. Jets +10 at
Baltimore Ravens -10 *Editor’s
note: NFL Lines now available
At the time of
writing, there was no line for this matchup
because both teams incurred injuries all over
the map after their season openers, and we
are talking major players here: Steve McNair,
Jonathan Odgen, Chad Pennington… and
yes, it stunk up the house… the Jets fans
showing pleasure in Pennington getting carried
off the field after injuring his ankle. It looks
very doubtful that any of these players will
be there once the first whistle blows on Sunday,
but does it really matter? The Jets could have
Pennington, Kellen Clemens or Joe Namath up in
there… they are not defeating this defense
at home. NFL Free Pick: Baltimore
San Diego Chargers +4 at New England Patriots
-4
There was once a time when all believed that
the NFC was without question the more superior
of the two conferences. We can all be in full
agreement that that has changed over the recent
years with the progression of Indianapolis, no-longer-forever-bad
Cincinnati, and these two powerhouses here. The
schedule gods were not kind to the Chargers.
They had to fight tooth, claw and nail to get
a win in their home and season opener against
Chicago in a game that had playoff atmosphere,
and now they travel to face what many consider
to be a much tougher opponent. The Patriots saw
that Chicago had the right strategy in shutting
down superstar LaDainian Tomlinson and could
have won if they (once again) did not have a
multitude of turnovers. New England will duplicate
this strategy without the turnovers. And yes,
I say it here and now that the Patriots have
a legitimate shot as any team ever at going undefeated.
Yes they do. NFL Free Pick: New England
Washington Redskins +6.5 at Philadelphia Eagles
-6.5
I said upstairs
that the Rams are in big trouble. Well, so
are the Redskins in this one. In watching the
Eagles over the years on Monday night, their
offense and defense has shown a penchant for
coming up with big, big plays, and this Monday
night will be no different. QB Donovan McNabb
showed some serious rust last week. Playing in
his first game in 10 months, he completed less
than half of his passes, and will be highly motivated
to show in front of a big audience that he hasn’t
lost it. On the other sideline, Redskins QB Jason
Campbell, in his 8th career start last weekend,
passed for a career high of, if you can believe
this, 222 yards. That says one thing: the Eagles
will stack the box like pancakes on a Sunday
brunch to stop Washington’s two-headed
rush attack of Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts,
making it a very long Monday night for Campbell.
