Betus - 2007 NFL Previews
When we were sitting here last year, the NFC
East looked like a ridiculous division. Each
team had a chance to win the division as free-agents
flocked to the NFC East. Instead, teams fumbled
and bumbled their way to the post-season.
The NFC East has new
faces, new starters and each team has a hope
of winning the division this year. So who’s
it going to be?
Dallas Cowboys - +2000 to win Superbowl XLII
The Cowboys were one
botched field-goal from advancing in the playoffs.
Tony Romo has had an entire off-season to shake
off the lingering affects of letting the championship
dreams literally slip out of his hands against
Seattle. I’m
sure spooning Carrie Underwood has helped too.
Despite what you may think of the overrated
Tony Romo, he is simply surrounded by too much
talent to fail. Jason Witten, Terry Glenn and
T.O. form one of the best receiving trios in
the league. Marion Barber III is probably the
starting back, but Julius Jones is no slouch
and both compliment each other beautifully.
The defense got a huge boost in the form of
LB Anthony Spencer, who is an explosive up-field
defensive stud. He can keep up with receivers
in coverage and dominate the backfield on strong
side rushes. Marcus Spears, DeMarcus Ware and
Akin Ayodele are glad to have him on board.
The biggest question
is whether Wade Phillips can get the most out
of Terrell Owens, who had a bad case of the
dropsy’s yet again last
season. This offense remains largely intact from
last season, so chemistry will not be a problem.
In the wide-open NFC
East, the Cowboys are the favorite to win the
division. They have an offense that can score
in bunches, and an explosive defense that will
be tough to run against. Unless you’re
severely anti-Owens, there is a lot to like about
the Cowboy’s chances in the NFC.
Philadelphia Eagles - +2200 to win Superbowl
XLII
Apparently, McNabb
wasn’t too pleased
when the Eagles drafted quarterback Kevin Kolb
with their first pick. Well, the Eagles probably
weren’t too pleased when McNabb went down
with season ending injuries in the past two seasons.
Can you really fault the Eagles here?
McNabb, when healthy, is still a force to be
reckoned with, but it remains to be seen how
strong his legs will hold up after surgery. Philly
lost playmaker Donte Stollworth to the Pats,
but picked up heralded slot receiver Kevin Curtis
from the Rams. Curtis will compliment the blossoming
talents of Greg Lewis, L.J. Smith and Reggie
Brown.
The most important cog in the Eagles engine
remains Brian Westbrook, who had the torch passed
to him by Tiki Barber as the most dangerous back
in the NFC. Westbrook is a phenomenal talent
out of the backfield as a runner and receiver
and has had consistent totals for the past three
seasons.
Andy Reid’s
4-3 defense got significantly stronger with
the acquisition of Takeo Spikes from Buffalo.
Spikes joins Jeremiah Trotter to solidify the
line-backer spot, which had been a question
mark for Philly. Spikes attitude and playing
style fit perfectly in this system and city.
The team’s hopes reside on Donavan’s
shoulders. If he can stay healthy, they have
a chance to compete for the division title. Without
him, the Eagles are in deep trouble since Jeff
Garcia cashed in on last season and now resides
in sunny Tampa.
It also would help
if Kearse could stay healthy. The Eagles are
a stretch to win the Superbowl because of McNabb’s
consistent health complications. This defense,
however, is nasty and gritty enough to keep
them in games.
New York Giants - +3500 to win Superbowl XLII
Let’s start
with Manning. He is the same mistake-prone,
pouty-faced young player he was last year.
Stats wise, he ranked out of the top-15 in
all the important statistical categories. Coach
Coughlin is on an red hot seat right now, and
he will need Manning to produce if he wants
to keep his job.
To shore up the tailback
spot, the Giants went out and peddled for Reuben
Droughns, who is pretty much a smaller version
of Brandon Jacobs. They don’t compliment
each other at all, which is going to make for
a predictable running game.
The defense is anchored
by studs Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora,
arguably one of the best defensive-end tandems
in the league. But after that, there is a steep
drop off in talent. Line-backer Antonio Pierce
can’t cover everyone, but his run
stuffing is solid. The secondary remains terrible.
The Giants are such massive underdogs because
Coughlin is not clicking with his players, and
Eli is regressing talent-wise. Unless he takes
some massive steps towards improving, making
the playoffs, mush less the Superbowl, are a
giant dream.
Washington Redskins - +4500 to win Superbowl
XLII
The show now belongs to Jason Campbell, the
Auburn quarterback who has patiently waited for
his chance to shine. J-Cam, who played with Cadillac
Williams and Ronnie Brown at Auburn, will have
two solid backs behind him in Ledell Betts and
Clinton Portis. That much should give the Redskins
some dark horse potential.
The receiving corps
still remains flooded with talent, but without
a coach that can get the most out of them.
Brandon Lloyd is lazy, and Santana Moss’s
stats are lopsided because he explodes for
two or three games a year and disappears for
the rest.
The secondary for
the Skins is daunting with hard-hitting LaRon
Landry being added to the fold alongside Sean
Taylor, Shawn Springs and Fred Smoot. Washington
will be tough to throw against, but their run
defense is…well…terrible.
The Redskins, like
the Giants, will need another season with J-Cam
getting comfortable to be effective. Keep your
money safe by keeping it as far from Dan Snyder’s
squad as possible. Besides, that guy has too
much money to begin with.
