Philadelphia Eagles vs. Green Bay Packers NFL
Betting Odds
The Philadelphia
Eagles kick off the season with high hopes and a healthy
Donovan McNabb back under center when they
step on to Lambeau Field against the Green
Bay Packers this Sunday. McNabb has been plagued
by injuries in consecutive seasons but has
consistently proven he can be an elite quarterback
when he is not hampered by injury or on the
DL. Add the fact that he has dominated the
Packers in his last three starts throwing for
950 yards and eight touchdowns without an interception
and there is plenty of reason for optimism
on the Eagles’ sideline.
Eagles’ offensive
coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will implement
the same ball control offense that worked so
well for Philly in their playoff push last
season. That means a heavy dose of versatile
running back Brian Westbrook (1,217 rushing
yards, 699 receiving yards) who will get the
ball in a variety of guises. McNabb will take
his shots downfield at opportune times, but
it will not be the aerial show it was at the
beginning of last season. The Eagles want to
protect their pivot by helping him get rid
of the ball quickly.
The key for the Packers
in this game is a much improved defense that
should be even better this season. Green Bay’s D shaved 16 first downs,
407 total yards and .5 yards a rush last season.
Aaron Kampman was second in the league with 15.5
sacks and defensive end Cullen Jenkins is turning
into a force at the other end. The Packers will
put pressure on MacNabb and rely on veterans
corners Charles Woodson and Al Harris to clamp
down on the Eagles receivers. The Packers talented
group of linebackers (A.J. Hawk, Nick Barnett
and Brady Poppinga) should be able to limit Westbrook’s
production. Last season the Packers gave up too
many big plays due to ill communication, but
in their second year under head coach Mike McCarthy
the problems in the secondary should be ironed
out.
17-year veteran Brett
Favre returns after a 2006 season that saw
him throw for 3,885 yards with 18 touchdowns
and 18 interceptions. The Packers did little
to provide Favre with more weapons via free
agency but third round pick James Jones led
the Packers in receptions in the preseason.
The key for Favre is simple – avoid
turning the ball over – which won’t
be easy against an aggressive and talented Eagles’ defense.
Favre will look to unload early and quickly to
top target Donald Driver and receivers Greg Jennings
and the aforementioned Jones. Tight End Bubba
Franks looked far more active in the offense
this preseason than his ghost-like performance
in ‘06.
The Packers running
game looks precarious at best with rookie Brandon
Jackson pegged to start but recovering from
a concussion, while incumbent Vernand Morency
is still on the mend. The Packers will hope
the running game can keep the Eagles defense
just off balance enough so that Favre can operate.
There’s no question the Eagles
defense will make life for Favre uncomfortable
in the pocket so it’s up to the veteran
to avoid forcing the ball into coverage where
cornerback Lito Sheppard and safety Brian Dawkins
have savvy big play ability.
We are prepared to
buck the trends here. The Eagles are 7-1 ATS
in the teams’ last eight
meetings and Green Bay has dropped their last
four home openers. The Packers did however finish
on a high last season winning their last four
games to finish 8-8. The Packers surging defense
should be enough to keep them within striking
distance.
