NFL Betting - Chargers at Patriots

When the two top Super Bowl favorites go head-to-head,
you can be sure the NFL betting numbers will
be off the charts.
The New
England Patriots are preparing to host the
San Diego Chargers in a rematch of last January’s
AFC Divisional battle. New England was victorious
as a 5-point road dog in that affair; this time,
the NFL odds are on the side of the Patriots.
They’re laying four points at Gillette
Stadium, with a total of 46.
It’s normal
for the Pats to get plenty of public support.
But the results from Week 1 are especially
encouraging for New England fans. The offseason
makeover at wide receiver was a roaring success
against the New York Jets, as Randy Moss and
Wes Welker each caught a touchdown pass in
a 38-14 romp at Giants Stadium.
The Chargers were also winners in Week 1, but
their performance left much to be desired. LaDainian
Tomlinson rushed for only 25 yards on 17 carries
as the San Diego offensive line crumbled against
the visiting Chicago Bears. It took a tricky
Tomlinson TD pass for the Chargers to secure
a payday with a 14-3 final.
There is plenty
of top-shelf talent on the San Diego offense,
which was ranked second overall in the league
last year in terms of efficiency as Tomlinson
romped to 28 TDs (plus three more through the
air) and MVP honors. Less talked about was
the Chargers’ offensive line – no
surprise there, as the “non-skill” players
almost always get overlooked. They led the NFL
in run-blocking, and were a solid ninth in pass
protection, according to the advanced metrics
at Football Outsiders.
So what happened
against the Bears? The Chicago front seven.
It wasn’t the best defensive
performance by the Bears in general, but they
easily took care of business in the trenches.
We can expect New England to take the same approach
on Sunday night. They held Jets RB Thomas Jones
to 42 yards on 14 carries in the season opener;
325-pound nose tackle Vince Wilfork kept New
York on its heels, and should be able to outmuscle
295-pound San Diego center Nick Hardwick.
This is something
of a revenge game for the Chargers; however,
the Patriots team they’re
facing Sunday night has proven the value of its
upgrade at wide receiver. And the secondary happens
to be the one glaring weakness on the San Diego
defense. It will be their Achilles’ heel
in this matchup.
Kick-off from Foxboro is scheduled for 8:15
p.m. Eastern on NBC.
