This year's Big Ten conference will be the most
competitive season in many ways, including college
football betting, that we have seen in recent
years, with three teams having a legitimate shot
at the title, while turning a profit for the
college football sports betting community.
Ohio State Buckeyes
2006 Record: 12-1 SU (Straight Up) 9-3 ATS (Against
the Spread)
Over/Under Record: 4-9
Following the departure of Troy Smith to the
NFL, the Buckeyes have a major hurdle to cross
in replacing their Heisman-winning quarterback.
Junior Todd Boeckman will likely be the man calling
signals backed up by sophomore Robby Schoenhoft.
Both quarterbacks have decent talent, but won't
have a lot of experience to throw to in the receiving
corp.
Ted Ginn and Anthony Gonzalez entered the NFL,
which will put the load on receiver Brian Robiskie
and 230-pound speedster Chris Wells at tailback
to spark the offense.
Defensively, Ohio State will have only five
returning starters, but will again be one of
the best in the Big Ten. Last year, they allowed
10.4 points per game, but that number will increase
slightly this season. However, they'll be strong
enough to cover many point spreads, while battling
rival Michigan for the conference title.
The Buckeyes are the
college football odds makers’ fourth
choice to win the conference at +250. That's
a great value on a team that'll be so strong
defensively. Regular season win total is currently
listed at 9 under -130. Ohio State opens the
season at home in a non-conference matchup against
Youngstown State. Predicted record: 11-1
Michigan Wolverines
2006 Record: 11-2 SU 7-4-1 ATS
Over/Under Record: 5-8
Michigan has won its 42 championships with solid
defense, but this year they'll rely on their
offense to get the job done, led by quarterback
Chad Henne, who returns for his senior season.
Henne will be protected by a big offensive line
with Mike Hart in the backfield and a talented
group of receivers to aim for.
Four defensive starters were drafted to the
NFL, but they still possess a solid secondary,
and that'll help. Being more offensively-minded
compared to year's past, with a lesser defense,
bettors should expect the Wolverines to put totals
over the number more so than last season.
The maize and blue are the
slight faves to win the Big Ten title at +120.
Regular season win total is currently listed
at 10 under -125. Michigan opens the season at
home in a non-conference matchup against Appalachian
State. Predicted record: 10-2
Wisconsin Badgers
2006 Record: 12-1 SU 8-2-1 ATS
Over/Under Record: 6-6
With John Stocco trying to find a home in the
NFL, senior quarterback Tyler Donovan will take
over behind a massive offensive line. His main
job will be to hand the ball to sophomore P.J.
Hill and watch him run to what could be a Heisman
Trophy year.
Defensively, the Badgers will be rock-solid.
Last year's D allowed the fewest yards per game
in the Big Ten and third fewest in the nation.
The secondary will see new faces and will be
slightly suspect early in the year, but a strong
pass rush from the defensive line will allow
the new defensive backs to familiarize themselves.
The Badgers are the
NCAA football odds makers’ second
choice, at +150 to claim the conference championship.
Regular season win total is currently listed
at 9½ over -130. Wisconsin opens the season
at home in a non-conference matchup against Washington
State. Predicted record: 10-2
