Superbowl XLII Betting - Will
Belichick Get the Boot?

The great thing about
the future is that it hasn’t happened
yet.
The 2007 NFL season is brimming with infinite
possibilities. On any given Sunday, any team
can win; also, any player can get arrested, any
coach can be fired, and Tom Brady can date any
supermodel of his choice.
Which brings us to
the NFL futures market. With training camps
still a month away and no more NBA action to
slake a bettor’s thirst,
we’re at that point on the sports calendar
where the entertainment value is in the NFL exotics.
Each of the 32 teams has a list of potential
outcomes, some more tongue-in-cheek than others.
The list for the New England Patriots has everything
a summer blockbuster should: sex, nudity, vice,
power, and majestic local settings. Oh, and some
football.
A sharp handicapper
knows that the exotics are more about fun than
profit. But there is still profit to be made;
the more the bet in question is related to
the game itself, the more likely you’ll be able to use your analytical skills
to place a sharp bet. In the case of the Patriots,
we have one bet that will be determined entirely
on the gridiron: Will Randy Moss get over 100
receptions? He did it twice with the Vikings,
but hasn’t even topped 60 catches in the
past three seasons. Moss is also going to have
to share the ball with Donte’ Stallworth,
Wes Welker, Kelley Washington and Ben Watson.
That makes him a questionable bet to hit the
ton, even at +500.
Three other bets on the list are directly related
to the game itself. Moss is pegged at +10000
to win the league MVP award. Brady is a much
more likely candidate for those honors, and is
priced accordingly at +800. The same thing that
makes Moss a long shot makes Brady a compelling
pick: the massive influx of talent at wideout.
Already a beloved figure playing a marquee position
on a public team, Brady now has the supporting
cast to rack up some gaudy numbers and mount
a serious Super Bowl challenge.
The other football-related
special asks if coach Bill Belichick will be
fired. It sounds crazy, but at +5000, it’s worth entertaining the
thought for a moment. But only a moment – the
Pats have won five division titles and three
Super Bowls since Belichick joined forces in
2000. He’d have to do something beyond
the pale to get fired, like mooning the crowd.
There are no odds on that happening, but if Moss
drops trou, it will pay out large at +15000.
Speaking of getting
caught with your pants down, Brady is -100000
to date yet another supermodel during the season.
What, Gisele Bündchen
not good enough? Now that’s the kind of
drive that makes a champion.
The Pats remain +200 favorites to win Super
Bowl XLII.
