Last year's biggest NFL money-makers were the
New York Jets and Tennessee Titans. Both teams
were 11-5 ATS (against the spread). It was a
big turnaround from the 2005-2006 season, when
both finished 6-10 ATS.
With camp beginning in two weeks and the regular
season kicking off in two months, the million-dollar
question for the sports betting world is: Can
the Jets or Titans repeat as top money-makers?
If the Jets are to start this year with a cover
victory, they'll have to do so at home against
the mighty New England Patriots in Week 1 as
the early 6-point underdogs.
Last year, the Jets beat the Patriots 17-14
in Week 10 as the 10.5-point underdogs, but it
was the Pats who took the cash in the playoffs
when they routed the New York 37-16 in the wildcard
matchup as the 9.5-point favorites.
Tom Brady and company turned a profit last season
with an ATS record of 12-7 which includes postseason.
On the road, the Pats were a money making machine,
with a stellar 7-1 ATS mark.
If you've looked in
the NFL Futures, you may have noticed the Patriots
are oddsmakers choice to win the AFC at +110.
Also, they are oddsmakers’ selection
to win the most regular season games with the
line being 11.5 under -125. As well, the Pats
are favored at +200 to win Super Bowl XLII.
Oddsmakers haven't given New England this much
respect by accident. The Pats will again be strong
this year and, according to the numbers, they
should be able to post a cover win in the season-opener,
which would make it difficult for the Jets to
repeat as top money makers in 2007-2008 with
a money dropping effort out of the gate.
It won't get any easier in Week 2 for the Jets,
as they take to the road to play the Baltimore
Ravens, who blitzed the AFC North last year with
a 13-3 straight up record.
The Titans will also be tested in their season-opener
when they face the Jacksonville Jaguars on the
road. Both teams manufactured 8-8 straight up
records last year, but the Jaguars were a strong
6-2 ATS at home.
Last year, in Week 9, the Jags beat the Titans
in Jacksonville, 37-7, as the 9.5-point favorites.
However, Tennessee bounced back with a 24-17
cover victory at home as the 3.5-point faves
in Week 15.
Like the Jets, if the Titans are to repeat as
top money makers this year, their quest will
begin in Week 1, as the early 6-point road dogs
at the Jaguars.
