Patriots' Futures Look Bright
Looks like we might as well just hand the Vince
Lombardi Trophy to the New England Patriots.
The Patriots are the
runaway favorites on the futures market to
win the AFC East (-500), the conference (+110)
and Super Bowl XLII (+200). And after loading
up at wide receiver with Randy Moss, Donte’ Stallworth and others, it’s
easy to understand why the betting public is
ready to jump on New England’s bandwagon.
But those are still
really short odds. Consider the next two teams
on the Super Bowl odds list, both of whom are
in the AFC. The San Diego Chargers, winners
of 14 games in the regular season, are +500
to win the title now that Marty Schottenheimer
(he of the 5-13 record in the postseason) has
been replaced as head coach by Norv Turner (he
of the 1-1 postseason record). The Indianapolis
Colts (+700) aren’t about to go away quietly
after finally winning their first Super Bowl
with Peyton Manning at quarterback.
Aside from these three
top contenders, another four NFL teams managed
to pick up at least ten victories during the
2006 campaign. One of those clubs is the New
York Jets, New England’s
AFC East rivals. But winning in the regular season
is one thing; going all the way to the title
takes a special kind of team. You can see the
difference in the futures market.
The Jets are +500 to upset the Patriots and
win their division, followed by the Miami Dolphins
at +900 and the Buffalo Bills bringing up the
rear at +1000. However, for the Super Bowl, the
Dolphins are +2800 with Trent Green at quarterback.
Chad Pennington and the Jets are way down the
list at +4400. Buffalo is out of the picture
at +8000, even with J.P. Losman showing some
promise last year.
The other three clubs to reach double digits
in wins last year were the Chicago Bears (+1100
to win SB XLII), the Baltimore Ravens (+1800)
and the New Orleans Saints (+1800).
The Ravens look like
the value pick of the three; they were the
top-ranked team during 2006 in terms of efficiency,
with the best defense in the NFL and an impressive
special teams unit. The offense was No. 14
out of the 32 teams – a
vast improvement from No. 27 in 2005. That’s
what a quarterback like Steve McNair can do for
your club. McNair could do even more this year
now that former Auburn Tigers guard Ben Grubbs
has been added to the offensive line.
Will Baltimore be
able to hang with the rest of the big boys?
The Ravens and Patriots don’t
meet until Week 13, but all good things are worth
the wait.
