The St.
Louis Rams are hoping to erase the painful memory of last
week’s woeful offensive
performance when they host the San Francisco
49ers in a key early season NFC West divisional
confrontation. Typically a high-flying offense
on the fast track at the Edward Jones Dome, Mark
Bulger struggled completing 22 of 42 pass attempts
for 167 yards and a lone touchdown strike to
Tory Holt (completing 52.3% of his passes is
not a good day at the office for Bulger). Adding
to the displeasure of the NFL betting public
was an uninspired outing by running back Steven
Jackson who managed only 58 yards on 18 carries
and fumbled on consecutive downs. The Week 2
football line has the Rams favored by a field
goal as they look to get into the win column
in 2007/08.
The ‘Niners managed to eke out a last
second win at home against Arizona but it wasn’t
pretty – especially on offense. Quarterback
Alex Smith was 15 of 31 for 126 yards and the
offense failed to get in a rhythm all game save
for the 2-play, 86-yard drive that culminated
with Arnaz Battle's one-yard touchdown and a
win. San Francisco’s main offensive weapon,
running back Frank Gore also couldn’t get
going – he was held to 3.1 yards per carry
and a total of 55 yards rushing.
Look for the St.
Louis Rams offense to get its timing back on
Sunday and for Steven Jackson to rebound and
have a big day. Last week the ‘Niners
defense gave up 92 yards to Edgerrin James and
a Cardinals team that ranked 30th in the NFL
last season averaging 83.6 yards rushing a game.
St. Louis clearly played out of its comfort zone
facing a tough Carolina Panthers defense last
week. On Sunday they’ll force feed the
ball to Jackson who should break the century
mark and help loosen up the defense for Mark
Bulger downfield.
Rams’ Coach Scott Linehan wants a more
balanced attack exercising ball control and this
week his team will need it. The passing game
may be a little tight after tackle Orlando Pace
was lost for the season. The Rams signed former
Patriot Brandon Gorin and they might shift tackle
Alex Barron to protect Bulger’s blind side.
Receiver Torry Holt had a strong first week catching
eight passes for 73 yards and a touchdown but
he’ll be facing an improved San Francisco
secondary that added corner Nate Clements and
strong safety Michael Lewis. Bulger should be
able to take timely shots downfield to Holt,
Isaac Bruce and Drew Bennett once the offense
establishes the run with Jackson.
San Francisco needs
to open up its offense and stretch the field
vertically with Alex Smith hooking up with
Darrell Jackson, tight end Vernon Davis and
last week’s hero: Arnaz Battle.
The Rams secondary was torched by Jake Delhomme
and Steve Smith last Sunday so the prospects
appear promising. Like the Rams, San Francisco
needs to get Frank Gore running toward daylight
which will eventually force the Rams to commit
to an eight-man front. The Rams failed to register
a sack last week so they desperately need defensive
end Leonard Little to pressure Alex Smith in
the pocket.
The St. Louis Rams
are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games versus
a team with a winning road record, and they’ve defeated the ‘Niners
in seven of their last eight meetings. With a
high scoring offense looking to make amends the
Rams should notch a victory in the win column
come Sunday.
