Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Ranked 11th, the Fighting
Irish are set to face off against 4th ranked LSU
in the Sugar Bowl, in New Orleans, on January
3rd. Looking to avoid their ninth consecutive
bowl defeat, for the Fighting Irish (10-2) it
will be an uphill battle against an LSU squad
that is playing in its hood. LSU Tigers (10-2)
will be in the advantage with lots of crowd support
as they make a short trip from their campus in
Baton Rouge to New Orleans. Not so for the Fighting
Irish.
Arriving at the Sugar bowl
with an eight game losing streak – tying
the NCAA record set by South Carolina and West
Virginia - Notre Dame could not have asked for
a worse place to try to end an NCAA record-tying
bowl losing streak!
Players to Watch:
Senior quarterback Brady
Quinn is one of the best in the nation. Throwing
for 3,278 yards with 35 touchdowns and only five
interceptions, Quinn hit on 63.4% of his passes.
The Heisman Trophy finalist won the Johnny Unitas
Golden Arm Award and the Maxwell Award as college
football’s top player.
Leading the LSU squad is
junior quarterback JaMarcus Russell, who achieved
a career high this season with 2,797 passing yards
and 26 touchdowns. Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was
Russell’s favorite target, catching 60 passes
for 912 yards and 11 touchdowns. Defensively,
the Tigers are solid, giving up 238.8 yards per
game.
Prediction:
The Tigers have a slight
edge over Notre Dame. Playing in their backyard,
to a crowd littered with their supporters, the
Tigers, whose defense has stood tall against the
nation’s best, and their offense, with its
dangerous weapons, in the combination of Russell,
Bowe, Craig Davis and Early Doucet, is decidedly
favored to win this match-up.
But Notre Dame has a question
to put to rest – Why is Notre Dame not able
to win bowl games? Will they answer back with
a win? With impressive senior quarterback Brady
Quinn at the helm, I think they just might.
