International Bowl - Western
Michigan Broncos and the Cincinnati Bearcats
The Western Michigan Broncos
and the Cincinnati Bearcats meet at the Rogers
Centre in Toronto on January 6, in the first edition
of the International Bowl. Western Michigan went
7-5 ATS and Cincinnati finished the season at
8-3 ATS.
Broncos quarterback Ryan
Cubit threw for 1,954 yards and 15 touchdowns,
and tailback Mark Bonds had 1,082 rushing yards
and seven touchdowns. Jamarko Simmons had 48 catches
for 496 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, Western Michigan
has one of the best run defenses in the nation
and its front seven swarms to ball carriers. In
addition, the Bronco pass rushers have taken advantage
of the run defense, putting opposing offenses
in plenty of situations with pass-heavy tendencies
- none more so than with WLB Ameer Ismail. Ismail,
who leads the nation with 17 sacks, has an explosive
first step and closes well.
Cincinnati tailbacks Greg
Moore and Butler Benton combined for 1,087 rushing
yards and eight touchdowns. Receiver Dominick
Goodman had 33 catches and three touchdowns.
The Bearcat defense is built
on speed rather than size and it has done a fairly
good job of stopping the run. SS Dominic Ross
rarely gets caught out of position and he has
intercepted four passes.
This is a tough game for
bettors. Both sides are pretty evenly matched,
so the smart money may be on the total. Over is
11-0 in Broncos last 11 games after scoring less
than 20 points in their previous game, which Western
Michigan did. Both defenses are a little better
than average, but this relatively low total goes
over.
