NFL Betting Divisional Preview - AFC East Odds

Talking about NFL
betting is like talking about Scarlett Johansson:
there is never a bad time to start the conversation.
With that in mind, let’s bring up some
NFL odds into the discussion as we do a division
by division breakdown. Now, the AFC
East:
Buffalo Bills
Widely considered
the bottom-feeder of the AFC East, don’t
be so quick to write this team off. They are
a young, scrappy team that finished up the
season 5-4 after their bye week.
They return an even younger outfit but a group
that is starting to grow. J.P. Losman proved
himself as a solid prospect and a quality quarterback
last season. Surrounding him will be wide receiver,
Lee Evans, who is ready to become a top-10 wideout,
along with Peerless Price and burner Roscoe Parrish.
There is a lot of speed to go around on this
offense.
The Bills also swapped out Willis McGahee, a
locker room distraction, for first-round pick,
Marshawn Lynch, who will be a much stronger asset
in the passing game.
While the Bills offense
will be fun to watch, their defense is extremely
green and can’t
be taken seriously just yet.
With such a young roster, the Bills are the
long shot in the AFC East.

New England Patriots
The Patriots have won the AFC East in five of
the last six seasons and are heavily favored
to do so again.
After getting by with waiver-wire scrap-heap
free agents, the Patriots finally opened up their
checkbook this offseason to bring in some big
names.
An already effective
offense adds Randy Moss, a potential Hall of
Famer, Donte Stallworth, a speed demon, Wes
Welker, Miami’s leading
receiver last season, and Kelley Washington,
a young prospect with potential.
On defense, the Patriots
added versatile linebacker Adalius Thomas, veteran
cornerback Tory James and safety Brandon Meriweather.
The Patriots easily field the top roster in the
East and should win it again. New England Patriots
Odds to Wins AFC East: -600
New York Jets
Similar to the Patriots, the Jets - a 10-win
team in 2006 - have upgraded their roster and
expectations for 2007.
A sterile running game will get a big boost
with the addition of Thomas Jones, who has been
a steady, yet underrated, running back. But even
so, the Jets offense is limited.
Quarterback Chad Pennington
lacks arm strength and furthering the lack
of big-play ability is the lack of explosive
weapons. Laveranues Coles isn’t much more than possession receiver
while Jerrico Cotchery isn’t much of a
deep threat.
But the Jets are using the similar model as
the Patriots, building up the defense first and
feeding off of that. They added two first-round
picks in corner Darrelle Revis and David Harrison,
which will improve an already deceptively good
defense.
Head Coach, Eric Mangini
has done what the Patriots have done during their
success under Bill Belichick, and that is make
an average roster overachieve. This team looks
far worse on paper than they actually are on
Sundays. New York Jets Odds To Win AFC East:
+550
Miami Dolphins
While the decision to pick veteran Trent Green
instead of possible franchise quarterback Brady
Quinn has been derided, this move will produce
much more short-term success.
Even though Green
is 37-years-old, the Dolphins still haven’t
had a quarterback like him in a long time.
The passing game really struggled last season
under Joey Harrington and Cleo Lemon and the
ripple effect of that was felt everywhere else
on the team. With Green, the passing game will
be respected, which will pay immediate dividends
to stud running back Ronnie Brown.
The Dolphins are a real wild card; with a talented
front seven on defense with a suddenly capable
offense, the Dolphins will be far from a pushover.
If Ted Ginn Jr. can be an
x-factor, as the Dolphins deem him to be, then
Miami will have much more balance and can definitely
compete for a playoff spot. Just remember, the
Dolphins acquired Daunte Culpepper last season,
a move believed to have secured the quarterback
position, the Dolphins were talked about as a
dark horse in the AFC. Maybe those predictions
were just one year too early. Miami Dolphins
