The Oakland Raiders finished with a league-worst
two victories last season - so what are the chances
they can up that win total by three or more in
2007? Vegas oddsmakers currently have the Raiders'
OVER/UNDER at five victories for this season.
And yes, that's the lowest win total on the
board right now. New Raiders coach Lane Kiffin
won't even have Randy Moss to help out on offense
this season (he was dealt to the New England
Patriots at the draft), and the team's starting
quarterback will either be a raw rookie (JaMarcus
Russell) or an unheralded veteran (Josh McCown
or Andrew Walter). Even with a solid defense,
the Raiders could be in tough to approach five
wins.
Next on the win totals list are the Detroit
Lions, who are sitting with an OVER/UNDER just
slightly above the Raiders at 5.5. The Lions
won three games last season, and are already
light years ahead of Oakland on offense. Detroit's
defense, though, was terrible in 2006, and they'll
need to be able to stop a few teams to grab six
wins and the OVER.
The Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, and Tennessee
Titans are all sitting with a posted win total
of six for the 2007 season. The Bills had seven
wins last season, while the Browns had four,
and the Titans surged to eight. Vince Young and
company might not be able to duplicate that late-season
magic again, though, to get back to that win
level.
The Houston Texans are currently pegged at 6.5
on the OVER/UNDER, while each of the Miami Dolphins,
Minnesota Vikings, and Washington Redskins are
listed with a win total of seven. Houston is
hoping that new starting quarterback Matt Schaub
can help them improve on last year's six victories
(and push them to an OVER). Miami, Minnesota,
and Washington picked up six, six, and five wins,
respectively, during 2006.
The Arizona Cardinals didn't finally break out
last season (they won just five games), but their
OVER/UNDER for 2007 has been set at 7.5. The
Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, and Tampa
Bay Buccaneers are also listed at a win total
of 7.5 for the upcoming season; the Packers won
eight times last year, the Chiefs grabbed nine
wins, and the Buccaneers were good for a mere
four wins thanks to their non-existent offense.
Vegas oddsmakers expect each of the Atlanta
Falcons, New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers,
and St. Louis Rams to finish at the .500 mark
this season - they are all currently pegged with
a win total of eight. Atlanta fell just below
that level with seven wins last year, while the
Giants had eight, the 49ers had seven, and the
Rams had eight.
Moving up into the contenders, the New York
Jets are pegged at 8.5 wins for this season,
while each of the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos,
Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh
Steelers, and Seattle Seahawks are listed at
nine wins. The Jets surprised with 10 wins in
2006, and grabbed a playoff berth. The Panthers
managed only eight wins, while the Broncos had
nine, the Jags picked up eight, the Eagles won
the NFC East with 10, the Steelers had eight,
and the Seahawks had nine.
It'll take a double-digit win total to get an
OVER for any of the Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas
Cowboys, or New Orleans Saints this season -
the are each currently listed at 9.5 on the 2007
OVER/UNDER. The Bengals won just eight times
during a turbulent 2006 campaign, while the Cowboys
managed to win nine contests, and New Orleans
won 10.
The Baltimore Ravens won the AFC North division
with 13 victories last year, but their OVER/UNDER
for 2007 is only pegged at 10 games by Vegas
oddsmakers right now. Baltimore went 5-1 against
their AFC North opponents in 2006, but feistier
campaigns from each of the Bengals and the Steelers
could erode their victory total down from 13.
The Chicago Bears also won 13 games in 2006,
and they boasted an 11-1 record against all NFC
opponents. Vegas oddsmakers, though, are hedging
their bets on them as well, pegging them with
an OVER/UNDER of just 10.5 wins for the 2007
campaign.
Finally, a trio of top AFC teams leads the win
totals chart heading into the 2007 season. The
New England Patriots and the San Diego Chargers
are both listed at 11 wins right now, while the
Indianapolis Colts top the league at 11.5 wins.
The Pats won a dozen times in 2006, and are a
favorite at some books to win the Super Bowl
this year. The Chargers had a league-high 14
wins last year, but will have a new head coach
this season. The Colts won 12 contests last year,
then went on to get the biggest win of all.
