Wild Card Picks - January 04, 2007

Jeff Wilson: There are four games this weekend,
and four selections. Since I have taken over this
column, I am 20-16 on the weekly selections and
14-7 on other picks, although past performance
is not always a good indicator of future performance.
Editor’s Note: The
selections in this column are purely the opinion
of the writer, and are not being endorsed by any
parties.
Kansas City (+7) at Indianapolis:
Indianapolis (12-4) is a
perfect 8-0 at home this year, but the spread
is only a touchdown because people are questioning
how in the world the Colts are going to stop running
back, Larry Johnson. Having safety Bob Sanders
back in the line-up will help, but he can not
be considered a cure-all.
Peyton Manning and the Colts
will put their share of points on the board even
though Chiefs cornerback, Ty Law had Manning’s
number while with New England. Kansas City (9-7)
quarterback, Trent Green does need to start being
more careful with the ball, but the Chiefs have
a good chance of keeping this game very interesting.
Pick: Kansas City
Dallas (+3) at Seattle:
This is the Saturday night
game as the networks like to see Terrell Owens
and Bill Parcells in “prime-time”.
Neither of these teams is playing great heading
into the post-season. Seattle (9-7) broke a three
game losing streak by beating Tampa Bay last week.
Meanwhile, Dallas (9-7) has collapsed, losing
three of their last four.
The key for both of these
teams is to throw the ball. The Cowboys are 24th
in the NFL in pass defense, and everyone has been
throwing on them lately. The problem for Seattle
is they have injuries at wide receiver, plus the
Seahawks’ cornerbacks could be without three
of their top four guys. I like Dallas in a minor
upset.
Pick: Dallas
NY Jets (+8.5) at New England:
The spread seems high for
this game as the teams split the season series,
and the game the Patriots won was only by seven
points.
The Jets (10-6) have played
very solid all year, and Coach Eric Mangini helped
develop a great defensive game-plan in their 17-14
win at New England on November 12th.
However, New England’s
(12-4) offense has been coming on lately, and
they will be far more ready to deal with whatever
the Jets throw at them defensively. Coach Bill
Belichick does not get out-coached very often,
and I believe that he, and his veteran group of
players, will be ready to go at home.
Pick: New England
NY Giants (+7) at Philadelphia:
When you look at these teams
on paper, there certainly is not a seven point
differential. Then, you look at how they are playing
on the field, and you realize that there is. Philadelphia
(10-6) has won five straight games with Jeff Garcia
at quarterback, and they more than earned the
NFC East crown.
The Giants (8-8) snuck into
the playoffs, but they still do not know if their
coach, Tom Coughlin will be fired, and running
back Tiki Barber has already signed a television
contract for his new career. Add in an injury
to tight end, Jeremy Shockey, and I don’t
see the Giants putting up much of a fight against
this very hot Eagles team.
Pick: Philadelphia
