The Oakland Raiders and
the San Francisco 49ers have been the worst
teams in the league the past three seasons with
identical 13-35 records, one game worse than
the lowly Houston Texans.
The books have set the
line at 6.5 wins for the Raiders this year and
the public has jumped all over the under, driving
the price all the way up to -150.
Looking at their 2006 schedule, it is not hard
to see why. The Raiders play eleven games against
teams many would pick to be playoff contenders.
Some of those are on the cusp and may not make
it, like the Chiefs and Cardinals, but the Raiders
are nowhere even close to being anybody’s
pick to make the playoffs.
Even the games they have against so-so teams
like Cleveland, St. Louis and the Jets are no
sure things for any Aaron Brooks-led squad.
After this season, the Niners may be sole owners
of the worst record over the past four seasons,
but it will not be by much. I would go with
public opinion on this one and go with the under.
The San Diego Chargers will fall from grace
this season under the inexperience of Philip
Rivers and the ‘leadership’ of a
man named Schottenheimer.
Rivers will not be able
to get the ball to TE Gates and aging WR McCardell
often enough to deflect opposing defenses from
swarming all-world back LT2. LaDainian will
still get his yards, though; they just won’t
be enough.

In fact, I would not be
surprised to see Tomlinson throw a full 25%
of this team’s touchdown passes in what
should be another amazing season for this mass
of talent. If it was not for the fact that Marty
Schottenheimer is the coach of the Chargers,
I might be tempted to say they can reach the
posted total of nine wins. Marty should be finished
in this league, however, and hopefully for Chargers
fans, after a losing 2006 season, he will at
least be somewhere else.
Remember the last two games of the season last
year when the Chargers could only score twice,
once each game, losing both games handily to
division rivals KC and Denver? Yeah, sure you
do. They lost because those were playoff games
for all intents and purposes - and Marty is
a bad, bad coach when it counts. Always has
been, always will be. Ask Chiefs fans. The public
has taken under the posted total of nine wins
this season, driving the price up to -145 and
I’ll buy into that .For
