The 2006 host country will
not have that advantage again, but they have
plenty of emerging young players who might make
the difference.

England is still trying
for their second World Cup title, the first
coming way back in 1966. David Beckham has quit
as England’s captain, but he could play
in South Africa at age 35.

It took Italy 24 years
before they duplicated their 1982 World Cup
win. How long will it take the Italians after
their stunning 2006 victory? The quest starts
in 2010.

Spain’s highest finish
in a World Cup was fourth place in 1950. These
classic underachievers hope to finally get the
monkey off their backs four years from now.
Holland 12:1
Holland finished in second
place in 1974 and 1978 and also fourth place
in 1998. A breakthrough World Cup win will give
them the recognition of their European counterparts.
France 15:1
Fans will still be talking
about Zinedine Zidane’s head butt that
helped them lose the 2006 final to Italy. Zidane
is one of several older France players who will
not be around in 2010.
USA 75:1
The Americans did not have
a good showing at this year’s event, but
the soccer landscape is changing and they are
an intriguing long shot for 2010.
